Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, the University of Leipzig, Dresden University of Technology and numerous other partners will be establishing a network for artificial intelligence in medicine (KIMed) over the next three years or so as part of the KIMed project. In addition to research institutions, this network will include the university hospitals in Leipzig and Dresden, regional healthcare providers and partners from the IT sector. A key component of the project is the creation of a public directory of stakeholders, partners, AI tools, data sources and datasets. This will form the basis for the design of a secure research environment, the Secure Processing Environment (SPE). In addition, collaborative demonstrators will be launched and training programmes developed to optimise the use of AI applications in medicine. A joint public relations strategy will strengthen the network in the long term.

Mittweida University of Applied Sciences is represented in the project by SICIM. Within the network, SICIM will be responsible in particular for the area of AI tools. This recognises the expertise of Professor Thomas Villmann’s team and the research carried out by Mittweida University of Applied Sciences (HSMW) in the field of AI for medical applications. At the same time, the project will provide new impetus in this field and make HSMW a more attractive potential project partner.

In total, the KIMed project will receive €3.6 million in funding until the end of 2027 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and from tax revenue, based on the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.
